After years of demand from hungry fans, there is finally a lovingly researched and thoughtfully crafted cookbook on the way that transports readers, cooks, and eaters just a bit closer to the rounded doors of Bag End. Showcasing dishes inspired by the works of JRR Tolkien, and enriched by details such as facsimiles of “original” recipes and marginalia, this is an immersive work of combined fiction and food. With just over 40 recipes in a halfling-sized paperback format, it's a great little addition to your kitchen collection. So pack your pocket handkerchief, roll up your sleeves, and prepare to eat like a Hobbit! For more information, please visit www.theshirecookbook.com

The Shire Cookbook Chelsea MonroeCassel 9780692472255 Books

This is a physically lovely book that features food that hobbits would love, properly divided into their 7 meals of the day! (There is also an index in the back.)

Besides the recipes- all photographed, it has photographs of Shire-like places, pictures of the "source materials" and the story about how they were found, and lovely botanical illustrations.

The recipes themselves are based on British home cooking and look delicious- and mostly pretty easy. An exception is the brewing recipes, which require equipment and knowledge of basic brewing of beer and/or mead... but which look very intriguing! Brewing supply vendors ought to be able to supply some of the less-common ingredients for some other recipes, too, like the dried elderflowers.

All told, there are maybe 50 recipes here, and I am including the separate recipes for, say, piecrust and pie filling, dumplings to accompany the stew, etc. That's not a lot for a book that costs what this one does, but they are all enticing- and the book itself is lovely!

The notes say the recipes are based on historical ones from the 1890s in rural England.

Recommended for cooks who are LotR fans, or interested in fairly accessible historic recipes.

The Shire Cookbook Chelsea MonroeCassel 9780692472255 Books Reviews

Beautifully illustrated book and lovely recipes. Can't wait to try these out with my hubby!
Gave as a gift to my daughter who doesn’t cook much but loves LOTR (as I do!)...she’s already made two recipes and loves it!!
Nice book with nice pictures. Great for anyone into cooking and hobbits!!!
An entirely magical and unique cook book. What a lovely combination of delicious recipes and beautiful pictures.
1) arrived on time and as advertised, to the seller's credit. could not be happier c

2) pleasant little cookbook full of hearty and fun recipes, exactly as promised. looking forward to trying them all out.
I absolutely LOVE this book. My mom, dad & I are die hard Hobbit & LOTR fans. I ordered it for my mom's birthday & after I opened it, I immediately ordered one for myself. It may sound weird, but the texture of the texture of the paper is amazing. So smooth, but still matte for easy reading. It just feels like a book you'll keep forever. All of the recipes sound so delicious & I cannot wait to try them! If anything were wrong upon arrival, I'm sure the seller would take care of it. Things happen, printers mess up & they probably don't have time to check each & every single page. So happy I got this!
I'm super torn on this book. While I love the pictures and want to like the recipes, I don't love this book. As soon as I opened it in my mailbox, I knew I was going to return it. My first pet peeve is the fact the recipes run together. There shouldn't be the ending instructions for one recipe on the same page as the photo and/or introduction to another recipe. I'm sure this has something to do with page count and money or what have you, but very disappointing. My second pet peeve is, honestly, the price. For almost $20, this just isn't worth it. If the book were maybe in the $10 range, I'd keep the book. The recipes are a little lackluster, and while most of them should be, I'd love to see some more creative things thrown in.

I have two other books by the author, which I love, though. It would be nice if the book could be re-done with twice as many recipes (does need something more than white bread and stew, maybe some party recipes or something not-everyday), a couple of small improvements, and I'd happily spend $30 on this book.
